Artificial intelligence is becoming part of everyday legal work, from research and drafting to document review. Touro Law Center is responding by adding formal AI education to its law program.
The new requirement will teach incoming students how to use AI tools while understanding the professional duties that come with them.
Under the new graduation requirement, every incoming student must complete three modules from the Procertas AI Suite. Students will then take part in a live, collaborative seminar. The session will examine practical uses of AI in legal settings and the ethical questions that can arise when attorneys rely on these tools.
The program focuses on more than learning how an AI system works. Students will study its capabilities, limitations, and the situations where human judgment must remain central to legal work.
Ethics and Risk Management

The curriculum also addresses several professional responsibilities. These include competence, client confidentiality, and the duty to supervise legal work properly. Students will also learn to spot risks linked to AI use, including inaccurate AI-generated information, excessive reliance on automated tools, and algorithmic bias.
Practical training will show students how AI can fit into routine legal tasks without weakening professional standards. The goal is to help future attorneys make informed decisions about when and how to use these systems.
Dean Elena Langan said the program aims to ensure graduates understand modern technology and can evaluate and use it responsibly. She also described mandatory AI education as a standard for technical competence and professional ethics in legal education.
The requirement applies immediately to this year's incoming class. By combining online training with live discussion, Touro Law's curriculum places AI literacy alongside the ethical responsibilities expected in legal practice.
Touro Law's new requirement reflects the growing need for attorneys to understand both the benefits and limits of AI. The program gives students a structured way to build that knowledge before entering legal practice.
